Ronin - Natascha McElhone

Last Update: 19 September 1998

"Deirdre ends up doing a great deal of car-chasing, and it was terrific fun driving with the race car drivers. I would have liked to have started earlier and done more. I can't think where else I might have had the opportunity to do that for free."

"I asked [technical consultant, Mick Gould] about the way someone like Deirdre would behave, I think she had some fairly rudimentary training but would not have the standard of training that Sam has. The kind of movement she's involved in would never have the luxury of resources that an American force would have. So she will make mistakes, she will blunder and get through somehow, more with self-determination than with experience or training."

British born actress NATASCHA McELHONE (Deirdre) is a rising star on the international film scene. McElhone most recently played opposite Jim Carrey as Lauren/Sylvia in Paramount's summer blockbuster The Truman Show.

McElhone's first major feature was Merchant/Ivory's Surviving Picasso, for which she received critical praise for her role as Francoise Gilot opposite Anthony Hopkins's Picasso. She has also apeared in Alan
Pakula's The Devil's Own, opposite Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford, and in Marleen Gorris's Mrs. Dalloway.

McElhone studied at the London Academy of Music and Drama for three years before beginning her career in the theatre in 1993. Her early stage credits include starring roles in the London and Manchester productions of Richard III, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Cherry Orchard and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

McElhone made her British television debut playing an army officer in Breed of Heroes, followed up by a guest appearance on the popular Absolutely Fabulous series and a starring role in Dennis Potter's last
miniseries Karaoke, opposite Albert Finney.
