Unknown model beats stars to play beauty Helen
By Polly Graham
AN UNKNOWN actress has beaten off competition from Hollywood's leading
ladies to play Helen of Troy alongside Brad Pitt in the £140million epic movie
Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman were among
the big name actresses considered during the mammoth hunt for the face
that launched a thousand ships.
But German-born model turned actress Diane Kruger pipped them to the post
as Helen, the heroine and epitome of beauty in Homer's Greek mythology
classic The Iliad.
It tells the story of Helen who was stolen by Paris from her husband
Menelaus which precipitated the Trojan war.
It is the opportunity of a lifetime to act alongside Orlando Bloom - Legolas
in Lord Of The Rings - who will play Paris, while Pitt stars as Achilles in
Wolfgang Petersen's big budget extravaganza which has already been
dubbed the new Gladiator.
Heart-throb Sean Bean will also play Odysseus, with Peter O'Toole as
Trojan king Priam in the film.
Diane is married to French actor Guillaume Canet who starred alongside
Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach. She studied with the Royal Ballet in
London before an injury wrecked her career.
Diane's film credits include Mon Idole, directed by husband Guillaume.
She also played a call girl in For Or Against and features in Luc Besson's
latest project Michel Vaillant. Diane, whose real name is Heidkrueger,
first made her name as a model for top designers Christian Dior, Chanel
and Armani and has appeared on the cover of numerous magazines.
Air Force One director Petersen saw over 2,000 women for the role hiring
casting agents in the UK and Hollywood.
But he decided he wanted a fresh face to play the beauty in the film which
starts shooting in England, Malta and Morocco, in summer. He narrowed it
down to four hopefuls, but it was Diane who was plucked from obscurity.
The casting has infuriated many of Hollywood's casting agents who wanted
their actresses to get the high profile role. It had been hoped an English
rose would land the part with Saffron Burrows and Claire Forlani being touted
as possibles. But it transpired that Saffron will in fact to play Hector's wife
Andromache. Claire has not made the final cast.
Director Wolfgang Petersen said: "Diane is not only a stunning beauty but
a gifted actress with tremendous emotional depth and presence."
