Leading film role for Abigail, 12

Abigail Stone begins filming at the end of June

A novice child actress from south Wales has landed a leading role in a
film starring alongside Lord of the Rings actor Sean Bean.

Abigail Stone, a pupil at Cynffig Comprehensive in Kenfig Hill, starts
filming independent thriller The Dark at the end of June.
The 12-year-old had to go through several rounds of auditions before
being offered the part.

The story centres around an American couple who lose their daughter.

Sean Bean and Coyote Ugly star Maria Bello play American parents who
encounter a strange Welsh girl (Abigail) the day their daughter dies in a
drowning accident.

Abigail's character bears a striking resemblance to the lost child.

The film is being made in London and the Isle of Man and begins
shooting at the end of June for 10 weeks.

It is based on a book entitled Sheep, written by Simon Maginn.

Abigail first found out about the part through her school and several
pupils auditioned for it.
She and six others got through to a second round at the nearby Pyle
Leisure Centre, where she had her first screen test.

After a nerve-wracking wait of several weeks, Abigail found she had been
chosen to meet the film's director, John Fawcett and have another screen
test.

She got down to the last two and was called to London for a hair and
make-up session before learning she was the director's choice.

Abigail said: "I'm very excited and very happy for myself.
"All my friends have been saying congratulations."

According to Abigail's teacher, Chris Dunstan, life became a whirl of events
after she was picked for the film role.

"She had to go up to London to have a face cast done, costumes fitted,
highlights in her hair and to see a stunt double about the underwater
scenes," he said.

"Now she has to go up to London yet again to have hair extensions and
practise the underwater scenes again."

Abigail will be the envy of many an older woman after getting the
opportunity to play alongside heartthrob Sean Bean.

The British actor, who is currently appearing in the Brad Pitt-led epic Troy,
has had international recognition following roles in blockbuster movies such
as Patriot Games with Harrison Ford, Bond villain 006 in GoldenEye and
the Oscar-winning trilogy Lord of the Rings.
