The Making of Sharpe's Peril

Last Update: 19 Oct 2008

In the hectic - and noisy - final battle scenes of Sharpe's Peril, our two endearing donkeys when on-set wisely sought the protection and solace of Daragh O'Malley - playing 'Patrick Harper' - a situation he handled as usual with his usual indomitable style. The habitual braying of the donkeys did cause some concern to Sound but I am happy to say that my solution to this - taken from the memoirs of serving soldiers of the British Army in India - of tying a weight to their tails to prevent their braying does still work.

Nearby Chuttapur became the city 'with a promise of much to offer' on rest-day as an alternative to Khajuraho.

I made two visits there to view the bazaar and smuggled contraband and left disappointed on both occasions regarding supply. The degree of skill exhibited in the craft-shops by workmen was remarkable - they used no power-tools beyond a wholly unguarded and wayward bandsaw - and their wages were pretty low compared to the high standard of workmanship achieved.
