WHEN SATURDAY COMES (1996) Channel 5, 9pm
Released a year before The Full Monty, When Saturday Comes mines the similar tragi-comic story of a working-class Sheffield lad made good. Sean Bean is Jimmy, a hard-drinking brewery worker dreaming of a career in professional football. In between drunken rows with his father and foreman Joe (John McEnery) and kicking around with the pretty Irish wages clerk Annie (Emily Lloyd, below), he is spotted by football manager Ken Jackson (Pete Postlethwaite), who signs him up for the local non-league team. Part love story, part testosterone-fuelled silliness, the film showcases sterling performances from Bean and Postlethwaite. (98 mins)
