SEAN BEAN'S Northern accented Macbeth may have impressed most of his
female audience but it cuts no ice with novelist Dame Beryl Bainbridge. " I
don't mean I want him to sound like Billy Connolly but I didn't expect his
superborations to have overtones of the Clitheroe Kid, " she writes
in an otherwise largely glowing review for the Oldie magazine.

But it doesn't stop there. "Why does he dress like Mussolini?" she
asks of our leather-coated hero. Because Sean Bean in leather is so much more
appealing than Sean Bean in doublet and hose, Beryl.
