Macbeth - Reviews - Jennie

Last Update: 06 Mar 2003

It was memorable, remarkable and I felt privileged to be there. The matinee was a good professional show, nothing out of the ordinary though, nothing wrong with it, just a good solid performance. A number of us met up beforehand, and again afterwards.....

Nine of us went next door for supper until going back in for the big one......

I got chatting with a chap in the row behind me who was talking to someone else about how many times he'd seen the show.....When he said 50 in its entirety I turned and thanked him for making me feel less obsessive...turned out he was the assistant director!

We drank a measure the table round during the interval... 2 bottles of house white between 10 of us in the bar...and toasted Sean and ourselves....and we hardened our resolve to give our own standing ovation!

Back for the second part... this show was giving me the impression that the cast had decided to "go for it" for the last time.......everyone was giving the max and putting hearts and souls into it.....A friend beckoned me and told me that there was an empty seat in the front row.....you'll never see me move so fast! So I was in the front row for the final part of the final show .....YES!!!!!!!!!!

I can't describe how good it was....it was everything that it ever had been and more...and yes, I wept (along with quite a few others)....and I was so close.......and I looked right into those lovely green eyes.......it was very emotional. All too soon, Macbeth was killed again! and as it happened, the crown fell off......spooky! and then....the end.......

Come curtain calls into the list......

Cast came out - lots of cheers etc etc. Sam came out - lots of yells cheering whistles etc. Sean came out and we stood and the noise was deafening and he smiled that smile.

The usual order..... Wild applause for Sean and Sam, wide grins among the cast... much more cheering, waving, whistling - more people standing...

As for the second but even noisier...and even more people standing.....Sean obviously really pleased with it all......so....

Now we're really going for it....uproar the whole place on its feet and Sean, bless him, led the cast in a round of applause to the audience...so they clapped us and we clapped them some more and they left the stage...as he did, Sean turned again and smiling broadly gave the audience a final clap.....

The noise had not abated, in fact had increased so out they came for a fifth time.......never seen that before......we were all till standing and yelling and cheering...and so were the cast, laughing, smiling and waving.....so they turned to go and as he did so.....Sean turned one final time, just before going off into the wings, treated us all to that diamond smile of his and, laughing, gave a real big two-handed "thumbs up" to us all....then he was gone....

A wonderful, magical night and a real privilege.......
