He rose to fame playing toughtalking characters who frequently landed
on the wrong side of the law. She perfected the art of playing the
ultimate English rose in a string of classic dramas.

Ray Winstone and Helena Bonham-Carter have nonetheless overcome
their differences and forged an unlikely union in a television biography
of Tudor England's most infamous monarch.

Winstone plays the lead role of Henry VIII in the £6 million production
while Bonham Carter stars as his beautiful but scheming wife Anne
Boleyn.

The production charts the monarch's descent from a handsome
womaniser into a bitter invalid whose actions split the church and the
nation.

Winstone, 46, who recently finished filming Cold Mountain with Jude Law
and Nicole Kidman, is also paired with Kathy Burke as Anne of Cleves
and Anna Friel as Katherine Parr.

He said: "It's a fantastic part for an actor to get his teeth into."

For Bonham Carter, 36, it will be her first television appearance since
Absolutely Fabulous nine years ago. There were reports that filming,
which started this month, was pushed forward so her pregnancy did not
show. The actress is expecting her first child with movie director Tim
Burton.

Granada's drama controller Andy Harries, who is executive producer of
Henry VIII, said of the king: "His reputation as a womaniser and tyrant
lives on 500 years after his death. Ray's incredible screen presence and
ability as an actor made him the obvious choice for the role."

The two-part drama, directed by Pete Travis of Cold Feet fame, also
features David Suchet, Emilia Fox, Sean Bean and Charles Dance.
