Henry VIII: Ray Winstone and Helena Bonham Carter

ITV1's ambitious retelling of the story of Henry VIII proved that risk-taking
commissioning decisions can still reap ratings rewards for the channel,
with nearly 8 million viewers tuning in for the first part of the drama last night.

Henry VIII stars Ray Winstone in the title role, with a weighty supporting
cast that includes David Suchet as Cardinal Wolsey, Helena Bonham Carter
as Anne Boleyn and Emilia Fox as Jane Seymour.

Last night the first episode of the two-parter, which concludes next Sunday,
was watched by 7.7 million viewers between 9pm and 11pm, according to
unofficial overnights.

Henry VIII attracted a 34% audience share and beat off stiff competition
from BBC1's Silent Witness, which attracted 7.3 million viewers between
9pm and 10pm.

Earlier in the evening ITV1's Heartbeat continued to dominate the 8pm-9pm
slot, attracting 9.5 million viewers and a 36% audience share.

Heartbeat got the better of BBC1's Monarch of the Glen, which attracted 6.6
million viewers.

Channel 4's Magic Month line-up did not prove much of an attraction for
viewers last night.

Repeats of two David Blaine shows, Vertigo and Frozen in Time, both
attracted just 1 million viewers and a 4% audience share between 9pm and
11.10pm.

Channel Five's Greatest Magic Tricks in the Universe... Ever, proved more
popular, attracting 1.5 million viewers between 8pm and 9pm.

The David Blaine shows were up against snooker on BBC2 and Sylvester
Stallone movie repeat Assassins on Five.

BBC2's live coverage of LG Cup snooker was watched by 2.5 million viewers
between 8pm and 10.30pm.

Over on Five, Assassins attracted 2.1 million viewers from 9pm.
