Jan De Bont and Lucas Foster's Blue Tulip Prods. has signed a deal with Dimension Films to produce "Librium," a futuristic sci-fi thriller written by Kurt Wimmer (1999's "The Thomas Crown Affair").
Wimmer will direct the film, which will be produced by De Bont ("Speed," "Twister," "The Haunting") and Foster ("The Mask of Zorro," "Bad Boys," "Crimson Tide"). "Librium" is on a production fast track, with principal photography expected to begin in Europe early next year.
"Librium" tells the story of the spiritual conversion of agent John Preston, who is the legal enforcer of an oppressive system in which human emotion is forbidden and suppressed by a required daily dose of Librium.
"This is an exciting and unique futuristic thriller," Dimension chairman Bob Weinstein said. "We are thrilled to be working with such talented people as Kurt, Jan and Lucas."
Wimmer said: "I am very pleased to be working with Dimension and Blue Tulip. Now the hard work begins."
Senior vp production Andrew Rona brought the project to Dimension and will oversee it while reporting to Dimension president Cary Granat.
The deals were negotiated on behalf of Dimension by Miramax vp business and legal affairs Brian Burkin. Endeavor and John LaViolette of Bloom, Hergott, Cook, Diemer & Klein represented Wimmer. David Gersh represented the producers.
Blue Tulip Prods., which has a first-look deal at 20th Century Fox, is set to begin production on the sci-fi action-thriller "Minority Report," directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, in early 2000. The film is a DreamWorks-Fox co-production.
