Lorna Doone, an epic romance and one of the classic love stories in English Literature, features a strong cast including Polly Walker, Sean Bean, Clive Owen and Billie Whitelaw. Based on R.D. Blackmore's novel and filmed on the outskirts of Glasgow in the spring of 1990, this vivid production tells of John Ridd (Clive Owen), a young West Country yeoman during the lawless times of King James II. Ridd's father has been killed by the Doones, a clan of aristocratic but murderous outlaws who inhabit a neighbouring valley. John's search for vengeance is complicated by his love for Lorna (Polly Walker), a daughter of the Doone clan. Their passionate love for one another drives the story towards a thrilling and romantic climax. Behind the romance and the adventure lie the richer themes of revenge and forgiveness. Through his love for Lorna, John is able to heal the scars left by the Doones' callous killing of his father. |
